Talking to Your Wedding DJ About Lighting Services

In the past, disc jockeys were looked on solely as providers of music services. Today, most wedding DJs equipped with high-tech lighting systems, video projection and television equipment, along with automated music request systems. For weddings, it has become very popular for brides and grooms to request lighting services to help set the mood of their event. Although a wedding could certainly be successful and engaging without lighting instruments, purchasing these additional services could be the difference between a fun party and a highly memorable extravaganza.

Most disc jockeys offer lighting service up front as a part of their wedding packages. The minimal package usually contains some sort of strobe light and a standard disco ball. Other packages may include intelligent lighting that is able to go to the beat of the music or, in more advanced setups, can be arranged in formatting lighting shows designed by the disc jockey. If you have wiggle room in your budget, talk to your DJ about intelligent lighting shows. Think about what you want your party to look like. Do you want to thrill your guests with high-tech club lighting shows, or would you rather have a more relaxed lighting setting with a disco ball and similar halogen lights. Do you want fog, and if so, does your reception hall allow for the use of fog? These are all questions to consider when choosing a lighting show.

Ultimately, the availability of lighting equipment will determine whether you will be able to achieve your dream lighting setup. Although most DJs are equipped with a considerable amount of lighting equipment, it is possible that the disc jockey may not be able to appease to your exact wants. Lighting equipment, especially intelligent lighting, can be very expensive. Some advanced lighting fixtures can run an upwards cost of nearly 10k or more. A few DJs have picked a large enough customer base that they are able to purchase these fixtures, but a desolate economy and saturated disc jockey market has forced many DJs to limit their investments to only the necessities.

If advanced lighting is something you truly desire and your DJ cannot provide the lighting you want, ask the DJ about hiring a professional lighting company. This is an expensive avenue, but it will allow for you to create a lighting show that will blow your mind. These companies run lighting for professional bands when hosting large outdoor concerts and events in halls that are not equipped with a professional lighting rig. If your budget allows for a lighting company, which can cost anywhere from $5000 to $20000 or more for the night, it is guaranteed to be a party to remember.

Oftentimes, the advanced lighting provided by a professional lighting company is unnecessary. DJs often possess a great deal of equipment that is sure to please you and your guests. Talk to you DJ about his lighting equipment and ask for a live demonstration of his offerings. By doing so, you will be able to mix and match the equipment that you enjoy.
